Case Study: Produce Grower - Toundra Greenhouse Serres

Overview

Our Packaging Specialist Craig Gray from Celplast, a division of Crawford, brought in Toundra Greenhouse Serres to provide a solution to their challenge. Toundra Greenhouse Serres is a cucumber growing complex located in Saint-Félicien, Québec. Their goal is to make Québec a self-sufficient producer of the vegetables it consumes.

Toundra Greenhouse’s challenge was they needed a solution to package 3 packs of their English cucumbers of which could achieve improved shelf life as well as reduced carbon footprint. Unsure of which solution was best, the CEO of Toundra Greenhouse reached out to Crawford’s Packaging Specialist, Craig Gray, with the challenge to find a shrink film that could improve the shelf life and carbon footprint of their English cucumbers.

Our Packaging Specialist then recommended GrowPack Anti-Fog Shrink Film – made up of polyolefin, GrowPack’s AFG film was created specifically for fresh produce to help deliver a superior, retail-ready package in just one hour. The shrink film was a success for the customer and they were able to achieve their goals seamlessly.

It was then that Dubes reached out to Celplast’s Packaging Specialist, a division of Crawford Packaging, Craig Gray, with the challenge to find a shrink film that could improve the shelf life and carbon footprint of their English cucumbers.

Solution

GrowPack Anti-Fog Shrink Film

With 35 years of expertise in shrink film, Craig Gray knew the perfect solution to the client’s problem: GrowPack Anti-Fog Shrink Film. Made up of polyolefin, GrowPack’s AFG film was created specifically for fresh produce to help deliver a superior, retail-ready package in just one hour.

Solution

— Eric Dube, CEO ,Toundra Greenhouse Serres

Reduced Carbon Footprint

Initially, Toundra Greenhouse Serres was wrapping each individual cucumber in polyethylene and then placing them into three packs. However, GrowPack’s AFG film enabled the client to wrap all three cucumbers together, effectively reducing the amount of material needed and thus reducing their carbon footprint by a minimum of 50%.

Improved Shelf Life

Due to AFG’s short anti-fog activation times (of 1 hour instead of 24+ hours), the cucumbers are retail-ready in a short amount of time, extending shelf life significantly.
